Hide Tanning Weekend Workshop (Free!)
April 20 @ 9:00 am - April 22 @ 5:00 pm
Join us for our first annual communal weekend hide-tanning workshop. This to be a free event, with nobody turned away for lack of funds, but we are going to be making a few purchases to effectively facilitate. It would be excellent if people could plan on making a small donation to help cover expenses. (Some tanning workshops cost $300.)
This will be held in Blue Hill at The Farming Artists’ cooperative homestead. This is a potluck-style event; relative self-sufficiency is required, RSVP strongly preferred. The main farmhouse will be off-limits.
Prepare to camp (very limited indoor cabin space available), pack in/pack out, bring what you need as far as speciality food items and please bring one communal dish to contribute to one meal for each day you choose to attend. Plan to pitch in and maybe work a shift in the kitchen or haul some buckets.
You do not have to bring any tools, or even bring your own hides, but please bring whatever you’ve got; you should bring an apron, rubber smock, OR otherwise dress in clothes you won’t mind getting messy. Dress smart, watch the weather, you will probably want boots.
Generally it will take between 1-3 days to process a deer hide all the way to finished buckskins. I’d say if you can commit to the whole weekend that would be ideal. Feel free to come and go as you please. If you can only come for a day, you will still definitely be able to learn a lot, but you may not be able to start and fully finish an entire hide.
This event, though maybe rough around the edges, will obviously be a whole bunch of fun.
